We will respond once charges are officially filed – Wontumi’s Lawyer

A member of the legal team for Chairman Wontumi, Enoch Afoakwa, stated they will respond to charges when filed.

He believes Wontumi has a strong defense against any potential charges. Wontumi was released from EOCO custody after meeting his bail conditions.

NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua confirmed Wontumi's release on June 2. He was arrested by EOCO after visiting the CID headquarters on May 27.

Wontumi was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on May 28. However, his legal team had not fully met the conditions for release at that time.

Enoch Afoakwa said, “Every reasonable person facing law enforcement has a defense.” He added they await official charges before deciding their next steps.

The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, revealed that Wontumi is under investigation for fraud and money laundering. He is also being investigated for involvement in an international organized crime scheme.

Justice Srem-Sai noted that EOCO is working with international law enforcement partners on this case. The ongoing investigation includes efforts to recover suspected proceeds of crime.
