We won’t leave until Wontumi is released – Minority MPs

Tension rose at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Thursday. Minority Members of Parliament held a sit-in protest. They demanded the release of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

The MPs wore their official attire and sat on the floor. They refused to leave until their demands were met.

They believe Wontumi’s detention is politically motivated and amounts to persecution. One MP stated, “This is pure intimidation. He has done nothing wrong.”

Wontumi was arrested during EOCO’s investigation into illegal mining activities and financial misconduct. Although he was granted bail, MPs claim delays are intentional.

This standoff adds to rising political tension. The MPs accuse authorities of using state institutions against political opponents.

In another development, Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi addressed rumors about Hon. Kennedy Agyapong's involvement in Wontumi’s bail package. He spoke on Movement TV.

Appiah-Kubi clarified that while bail conditions are nearly met, Agyapong is not paying for it.

“The person helping has chosen to stay anonymous,” he said. “I’ve not been authorized to disclose any name.”

He praised Agyapong for assisting Prof. Ameyaw Akumfi in a different legal matter but denied claims linking him to Wontumi’s bail support.

Wontumi’s legal team argues that the charges against him are exaggerated and politically motivated. They remain hopeful that the bail process will conclude soon.
