Weija Ramsar site: Caitec defies Mahama’s order to reverse illegal landfilling

Transport company Caitec has not followed a presidential directive. The directive requires them to reverse illegal reclamation at the Weija Ramsar site. President John Dramani Mahama issued this order during a tour of flood-prone areas in Accra. He instructed the company to undo the reclamation at their own cost. This is necessary for easy dredging as Accra prepares for the rains.

An inspection by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) found that Caitec has ignored these orders. On April 10, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo expressed her disappointment. She emphasized that the government may take action if the company continues to defy the directive.

Ocloo stated, “His Excellency told them to do two things: scoop all materials used and dredge the area at their own cost.” She noted that they sent a letter but found no action taken upon inspection. “We will remobilize and return with our machines,” she added.

She mentioned there are many machines available, so releasing them should not be an issue. Ocloo described Caitec's inaction as intentional and questioned who might be compromising with them. “They know this exercise was supposed to start today,” she said, expressing frustration over their lack of compliance.

“If the company refuses, we will enforce the law,” she concluded firmly.
