Western Region NDC Youth Demand Local Appointment for National Service Authority Boss
The Western Region's National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Wing is demanding a local leader. They want someone from the region to be appointed as the National Service Authority boss. Kweku Mensah, the NDC’s Sekondi Youth Organiser, expressed their concerns about this issue.
Recently, some NDC supporters protested at the National Service Authority office. They were unhappy with Daniel Dawusu's appointment as Regional Director. The youth claim that Felix Gyamfi, the Acting Director-General, broke his promise to appoint a local candidate.
Gyamfi had previously asked for names from each region for these roles. Gilbert Kweku Nyame was nominated for the Western Region office. Nyame visited the authority's office to meet staff while awaiting formal communication about his appointment.
Mensah clarified that they did not protest against Dawusu directly. He stated that choosing Dawusu over Nyame was dishonest. Gyamfi had assured them that he would appoint Nyame as director.
He noted that other regional directors were appointed from their respective areas. However, when it came to the Western Region, someone was transferred from Upper East instead of promoting a local candidate.
The youth felt transferring Dawusu would not have been an issue if Gyamfi had kept his word. Sources revealed that Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, met with NDC youth leaders and Dawusu to address their concerns.
Nelson suggested they work with authority leadership while allowing Dawusu to start his role. However, this suggestion was rejected by the NDC youth.
On April 16, the youths returned to lock up all offices at the authority. A complaint was filed at the regional police station in Sekondi after this action. The offices were reopened later that same day.
In related news, on February 13, 2025, the National Service Authority paid outstanding allowance arrears owed to service personnel across Ghana. Allowances for November 2024 through January 2025 were deposited into accounts of about 106,223 individuals.
