Western Region Fishermen Propose New Closed Fishing Season Dates
Fishermen in Ghana's Western Region want the closed fishing season moved to May and June. They expressed their concerns after the Akufo-Addo administration rejected their proposal for monthly changes. The fishing communities support the closed season but seek broader consultation on its timing.
Artisanal fishermen are exempt from this year's closed season, which runs from July 1 to August 31. However, they prefer future seasons to be scheduled earlier. Joseph Asare, an artisanal fisherman from Jomoro, emphasized the need for stakeholder discussions about future dates.
Asare stated that fishermen traditionally avoid fishing in May and June. He believes these months should be designated as the closed season. He thanked the minister for this year's exemption but highlighted ongoing economic challenges for fishermen.
He noted that many rely solely on fishing for income. Closing the sea without government support makes it hard to meet basic needs during this time. Asare suggested scrapping the closed season if it does not benefit local fishermen.
Kwesi, another fisherman from Jomoro, echoed these sentiments. With a family of five, he struggles during the closed season period. He explained that most fishermen refrain from fishing in May and June due to rain.
Mike Abeka-Edu, Secretary of the Western Region Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council, praised the decision to exempt artisanal fishermen this year. He believes it addresses some economic concerns raised by canoe fishermen.
Abeka-Edu mentioned that stakeholders have reservations about the current closed season dates. The Ministry of Fisheries is considering solutions to address these issues while protecting fish stocks.
He also urged local managers of subsidized premix fuel to distribute it fairly among fishermen. Fish processors and fishmongers reported negative impacts on their livelihoods since the introduction of the closed season in 2016.
The national government implemented this policy to combat declining fish production under sections 76 (3) and 84 of the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625). The "closed season" refers to a period when fishing activities are halted during spawning times.
In related news, two fishermen tragically died after their canoe collided with a patrol boat while fishing at night on July 27, 2023. The patrol boat belonged to Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
