Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has spoken out about her situation. She claims the treatment she is receiving is worse than that of treason suspects.
In a supplementary affidavit filed with the Supreme Court, she alleges violations of her rights. This affidavit was submitted on May 26, 2025, as part of her legal challenge.
Torkornoo described several troubling developments. She noted the denial of access to the hearing room for her family. She also mentioned searches on her body and restrictions on communication devices for herself and her lawyers. In contrast, petitioners had access to their phones and laptops.
She stated that these actions show a deliberate effort to inflict mental torture. Torkornoo believes this treatment violates her fundamental rights.
She expressed concern about the judicial process she is facing. “They want to break me,” she said. “What I am going through is not even meted out to persons accused of treason.”
Torkornoo emphasized that the Supreme Court is her only protection against unconstitutional actions. She believes it symbolizes judicial independence.
She revealed that she has not been informed about the legal basis for the case against her. “How can I defend myself when I don’t even know what I’m defending against?” she asked.
She pointed out that previous Article 146 proceedings were held in judicial facilities. The current high-security location for her hearings confuses her.
Torkornoo called this process a “mockery of justice.” She believes it aims to unjustifiably remove her from office as Chief Justice.
On May 23, 2025, despite receiving court documents, the committee decided to continue its inquiry.
“This is bigger than me,” she warned. “What is at stake is the security of tenure for every justice.”
She concluded by stating that this issue threatens the very soul of our Constitution.
