Recent heavy rains in Accra and other areas have caused significant damage. Reports indicate that a young schoolboy has lost his life due to the floods.
These events highlight the government's failure to manage and prevent flooding. There is growing concern about the lack of a comprehensive flood management plan. Many areas previously safe from flooding are now affected by even light rainfall.
The government has allegedly spent large sums on flood prevention efforts. They claim to have invested $200 million in the Greater Accra Resilient Integrated Development Programme (GARID). However, the benefits of this spending are not yet visible. Recently, parliament was recalled to approve an additional $150 million for GARID.
Protecting lives and property should be a top priority for any government. The current administration has not succeeded in this area.
If given the chance to lead again, I will prioritize finding engineering solutions for flooding. A new NDC government under my leadership will implement effective prevention and management plans. We are committed to bringing about necessary changes for our nation.
Our plans include investing in sustainable drainage systems and clearing waterways. Proper waste management and proactive measures against heavy rains will also be key focuses. We must ensure the safety of our people’s lives and livelihoods.
It is time for real change and effective solutions. Let us unite as Ghanaians to build a safer, more resilient Ghana together.
Your voice and action are vital in this effort. Together, we can make a difference for our country.
