What kind of lawlessness is this? Egyapa Mercer fumes over NIB's attempted arrest of Ntim Fordjour

Former Minister for Tourism and Creative Arts, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has condemned the attempted arrest of Reverend John Ntim Fordjour. Fordjour is the Ranking Member of Parliament's Defence and Interior Committee. The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) tried to arrest him recently.

Mercer spoke on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, April 12. He questioned the legal basis for the attempted arrest. He called it a troubling sign for Ghana’s democracy.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 8. It sparked outrage among members of the Minority in Parliament. Mercer reviewed Fordjour’s press statement multiple times.

He expressed confusion over the justification for the arrest. “I am still at a loss as to what crime he has committed,” he said.

Mercer described the incident as a sign of creeping authoritarianism. He asked, “What kind of lawlessness is this?” He expressed hope that Ghana would not regress into a military era.

He urged all Ghanaians to stay vigilant and protect democratic values. Mercer also called on state institutions to act within the law. He warned against actions that could intimidate Parliament members or undermine democracy.
