What morality justifies GHC62k vs GHC500? – Kwesi Pratt bemoans salary inequities

Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has criticized salary disparities in Ghana's public sector. He called the differences scandalous and immoral. Some workers earn over GHC62,000 a month, while others make just GHC500.

Pratt spoke on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, as reported by MyNewsGh. He referenced a new report from ActionAid. The report revealed that public spending cuts in six African countries have reduced wages in health and education by up to 50% over five years.

The report found that 97% of surveyed workers in Ghana and other countries cannot meet basic needs like food and rent. Pratt questioned the morality of such wage gaps. “What kind of skills can make this okay?” he asked, visibly shocked.

He rejected the argument that high-paying jobs require special skills. He noted that low-wage workers also possess vital skills necessary for the system to function.

Pratt argued that judges earning large salaries cannot perform the jobs of those making GHC500. He stated this unjust system is unsustainable and inhumane.

“When you pay someone so little they can’t afford calories to survive,” he said, “you’re sentencing them to a slow death.”
