Media personality Johnnie Hughes has sparked discussions about Africa's unity. He criticized African leaders for their slow progress in achieving integration.
On his show, Johnnie’s Bite on 3FM, he highlighted Africa's vast resources. He noted these resources are underutilized due to disunity and poor leadership.
Hughes pointed out the contradiction of discussing a single currency while introducing new denominations. He recalled the excitement over the proposed 'Eco' currency. Now, there are 200 Ghana cedi notes in circulation.
He expressed disappointment that Africa hasn't learned from the European Union. The EU successfully uses a single currency, the Euro, among its members.
Hughes compared Europe’s Schengen visa and Euro to Africa's efforts. He questioned what tangible steps Africa has taken toward unity.
He stressed that true development requires real unity, not just words. “United we are rock. Divided, we are sand,” he stated.
Reflecting on Africa Day on May 25, he called for action. While the African Union's ideals seem noble, he believes it's time to act.
“We must unite for development and progress,” he urged. He asked what benefits have come since the OAU became the AU.
