Where were you then? – Prof. Mike Oquaye blasts selective criticism over CJ petition

Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, criticized Ghanaians for selective outrage. He spoke about the petition process to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse, he questioned why many Ghanaians stayed silent. Some current critics ignored the same constitutional issues for years.

“Why have Ghanaians watched this law without speaking up?” he asked. Prof. Oquaye emphasized that some critics did not voice their concerns.

He has long raised issues about judicial accountability in Ghana's constitution. “I wrote on all these things during the IEA Constitutional Review Series,” he said.

Prof. Oquaye recalled a significant moment when he shared his views publicly. “I presented my thoughts at the University of Ghana alumni lecture ten years ago,” he noted.

He believes the uproar over Chief Justice Torkornoo is driven by emotion, not principle. “Why do we allow such things to happen?” he questioned.

He expressed frustration over people crying foul only when someone they favor is affected. “What is good for the goose is good for the gander,” he stated emphatically.
