White smoke emerges as a new Pope is elected

A new pope has been chosen. This was signaled by white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney in Vatican City. The name of the new pontiff will be announced soon. He will appear on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The decision was made by 133 red-robed cardinals from around the world. They gathered in secrecy for the papal conclave. During this process, they were cut off from the outside world. They cast their ballots to elect the next leader of the Catholic Church, which serves over 1.4 billion people.

News of the white smoke brought joy to St. Peter’s Square. Thousands had been waiting in anticipation. Applause, cheers, and tears erupted as the smoke rose, confirming a two-thirds majority.

“I’m so happy; it’s incredible to be here,” said Roseleia Cordeiro, 42, from Brazil. She hugged her friends and expressed her gratitude to God for this moment.

Each puff of white smoke drew louder cheers from the crowd. Worshippers celebrated with prayers, songs, and joyful tears while awaiting their new spiritual leader's first appearance.
