Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has been suspended. This raises questions about who will take over her duties in Ghana’s judiciary.
According to tradition, the most senior justice steps in as Acting Chief Justice. That role now belongs to Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the Supreme Court's most senior member.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was appointed on June 11, 2008, by former President John Agyekum Kufuor. He has served for over 15 years and is well-respected for his legal expertise.
Before this role, he was a Justice of the High Court and the Court of Appeal. He gained national attention during the landmark 2013 presidential election petition case.
His experience makes him a suitable choice to lead the Supreme Court temporarily. Chief Justice Torkornoo took office in June 2023 and was only the third woman in this position in Ghana's history.
Her suspension has sparked debate and legal discussions. However, the leadership transition seems to follow judicial protocol.
While the Judicial Council reviews her status, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will ensure judicial functions continue smoothly. The Supreme Court consists of 13 justices and is crucial for resolving constitutional issues in Ghana.
Maintaining leadership continuity is essential for public confidence during transitions. The legal community and public are watching closely for updates on Justice Torkornoo’s future and any potential permanent successor.
