The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, announced that no hospitals under the Agenda 111 initiative are operational.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, he explained that this situation led President John Mahama to call for a full audit of the projects.
“None of the Agenda 111 hospitals is operational as we speak,” Mr. Akandoh stated. He added that President Mahama directed an audit to understand the project's true status.
Mr. Akandoh criticized the previous Akufo-Addo administration for poor planning and implementation. “We all know how Agenda 111 started. The project was not handled well,” he said.
He noted that even with plans to build 111 hospitals, they could have staggered construction and completed them in phases.
The Minister mentioned that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo promised to hand over completed hospitals before leaving office. Unfortunately, not a single hospital is operational.
He stated that the Agenda 111 project now falls under the Ministry of Health's oversight. Efforts are being made to assess its feasibility and sustainability.
Mr. Akandoh pointed out budget inconsistencies in the project costs. “The estimated cost was between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion,” he said.
“By the time they left office, nearly $400 million had already been spent.” He lamented that if they had staggered construction properly, more than 20 hospitals could have been completed by now.
Referring to former President Akufo-Addo’s last State of the Nation Address, Mr. Akandoh said he claimed three hospitals were completed and commissioned on December 5. However, when verified after President Mahama's address, none were operational.
The Health Minister revealed that as part of the audit, President Mahama requested a comprehensive blueprint for the project’s future.
“President Mahama has directed us to audit Agenda 111 and present him with a clear plan,” he said, adding they have been given timelines for this task.
