Why NPP risks becoming irrelevant by 2028—CDD fellow warns

Dr. Kwame Asiedu Sarpong, a fellow at CDD-Ghana, has issued a warning. He cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rethink its strategy. If not, they risk becoming politically irrelevant by 2028.

His comments follow findings from the latest Global Info Analytics National Tracking Poll. Dr. Sarpong noted that the opposition is losing voter support despite Ghana's economic challenges.

The poll indicates that 62 percent of voters believe Ghana is on the right path. This is a significant increase from 32 percent in October 2024.

President Mahama enjoys a strong approval rating of 66 percent. This approval crosses party lines, except in the Ashanti Region, where many feel Ghana is still on the wrong track.

Dr. Sarpong observed that NPP support is declining rapidly. Their leadership ratings are falling even with inflation and unemployment as top concerns for voters.

He described the NPP’s decline as shocking. Once seen as a natural alternative, they are now losing support.

He warned the NPP against ignoring poll results like they did before past elections. “They can choose to ignore this poll or learn from it,” he said.

Dr. Sarpong also highlighted public anger over galamsey (illegal mining). He urged swift action to prevent future backlash against the government.
