Why is it difficult for people to understand that Ofori-Atta is sick? – Frank Davies asks

Frank Davies, a member of Ken Ofori-Atta's legal team, defended his client today. Ofori-Atta is the former Finance Minister. He could not appear before the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as ordered.

Mr. Davies cited health complications as the reason for Ofori-Atta's absence. He expressed concern about public skepticism regarding Ofori-Atta's condition. The former minister is currently receiving treatment in the United States.

Davies questioned why people find it hard to understand Ofori-Atta’s health issues. He used an analogy about unexpected health problems to illustrate his point. This situation was known before any charges were prepared against him.

The OSP had warned that failing to appear could label Ofori-Atta a fugitive. This could lead to an INTERPOL Red Notice and possible international arrest.

Background of the Case

In January 2025, the OSP notified Ofori-Atta he was a suspect in five cases. They requested his appearance on February 10, 2025. His legal team informed them he was abroad for medical reasons and offered representation.

The OSP rejected this offer and insisted on a firm return date. When no date was provided, they declared him a fugitive on February 12, 2025.

Later, Ofori-Atta's lawyers submitted a doctor’s note about his condition. It indicated he needed tests and possibly surgery with no clear return date. On February 18, after providing a May return date, the OSP removed him from their wanted list.

In March 2025, Ofori-Atta filed a lawsuit against the OSP and its Special Prosecutor. He sought compensation for being unlawfully declared wanted and requested removal of related content from social media platforms. The Human Rights Court will rule on this case on June 18, 2025.

Current Developments

Despite assurances of his return, reports indicate that Ofori-Atta's health has worsened. This deterioration prevented him from appearing before the OSP today.

Mr. Davies mentioned that they submitted a letter to the OSP on May 27 regarding this issue. He also suggested considering virtual interrogation for the former minister.
