Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has raised concerns about the petitions against the Chief Justice. He noted that this situation is unprecedented in Ghana’s judicial history.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana, he said many people are discussing the petitions sent to the President. He counted five petitions and questioned why this Chief Justice faces such scrutiny.
Pratt asked, “What is it about her? What has led to this?” He emphasized that while the constitution provides a process for these issues, it also requires confidentiality.
He stated, “The constitution clearly says this should be confidential.” The petition details should not be public, and hearings must be private.
Pratt warned that leaking sensitive information could harm reputations before any findings are made. He explained that confidentiality helps prevent frivolous petitions from damaging someone’s reputation.
He then questioned who might be responsible for these leaks. “Who is violating the constitution? Is it the Chief Justice or the presidency?”
Pratt pointed out that only one party has been confirmed to leak information so far. He recalled an incident involving President John Mahama's letter to the Chief Justice.
In that case, Mahama complained about a leaked request for permission to respond to allegations against her. Pratt described that leak as being done in bad faith.
