Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has questioned President John Dramani Mahama about freezing his accounts.
Wontumi stated he never served under Akufo-Addo’s administration. He asked why the Mahama government is attacking him. He expressed that the government's actions against him are unfair.
In an interview on Wontumi TV on May 15, 2025, he claimed Mahama personally hates him. He accused the government of wrongful accusations.
“They know Wontumi is winning, so they want to attack me,” he said. “I have never been on any board or worked as a government official.”
He continued, “No minister can say they have given me a job before. So why close my account?” He criticized Mahama's government for its handling of the situation.
The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) has frozen all of Wontumi’s accounts. This action follows Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020.
A document from the FIC states: “Freeze all accounts related to Bernard Antwi Boasiako and others.” The letter directs immediate action pending further instructions.
Additionally, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah announced steps to revoke Akonta Mining Co. Ltd's lease immediately.
