“With this Dumsor Levy, even when you are walking you pay” – Alhassan Tampuli

Alhassan Tampuli, a member of parliament for Gushegu, spoke about the dumsor levy. He is also a former Deputy Transport Minister. He stated that every Ghanaian will pay this levy.

Tampuli emphasized that even walking Ghanaians will be affected. He compared the dumsor levy to the NPP’s e-levy, which aimed to widen the tax base.

On JOY FM's morning show, he said there is no innovation in this new tax. He noted that fuel prices have always impacted costs in Ghana.

He explained that with the dumsor levy, everyone pays because fuel affects everything.

In contrast, President John Dramani Mahama claimed the energy sector levy won’t raise fuel prices. He called the ₵1 dumsor levy a difficult but necessary decision.

Mahama insisted that this levy would not increase fuel prices. He urged Ghana to use recent currency gains to solve energy issues.

During a presentation at Jubilee House, Mahama said this decision was not taken lightly. It is necessary and justifiable for addressing energy challenges.

John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, clarified the purpose of the new levy. He stated it is not meant for paying legacy debts in the energy sector.

Instead, it will fund liquid fuel costs not covered by electricity tariffs. This creates financing challenges for the government.
