Wontumi's arrest: NPP supporters block police riot vehicle with truck, car tyres at EOCO

On Thursday, May 28, supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) protested. They blocked a police riot control vehicle with a pick-up truck and car tyres. This was in response to the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman and has been held at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The protest began when NPP Members of Parliament marched from Parliament House to EOCO. They showed solidarity for Wontumi after the Minority walked out earlier in the day. Their walkout was against the bail conditions imposed on him.

Upon reaching EOCO, supporters gathered at the entrance. They held hands and chanted songs demanding Wontumi's immediate release. He had been in custody for nearly 48 hours.

Tensions rose when a police vehicle tried to enter EOCO. The crowd hooted at it and used a pick-up truck to block its path. Supporters banged on the vehicle, refusing to let it through.

Some protesters dragged car tyres onto the road to obstruct access further. Police officers engaged with the crowd to calm tensions and understand their concerns.
