Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Effia Constituency, criticized the arrest of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako. Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Boamah-Nyarko called the arrest unnecessary and unfair. He compared it to a crackdown on criminal gangs. “The scenes make it seem like we are arresting criminals,” he said on Good Morning Ghana.
He questioned why only Wontumi was targeted. “Are we saying that only Wontumi is involved in this business?” he asked.
Boamah-Nyarko noted that Tarkwa, Bogoso, and Prestea have illegal mining issues too. “We have more mining kingpins destroying our reserves,” he stated.
He warned that singling out political figures could be seen as witch-hunting. “This approach allows others to escape scrutiny,” he cautioned.
Despite his concerns about the arrest, Boamah-Nyarko affirmed that no one is above the law. “Everyone suspected of illegal mining should be investigated,” he said.
He warned that if politics continues to dominate decision-making, Ghana could collapse. “If we follow politics, this country will collapse,” he stated.
