Wontumi’s arrest: NDC setting a dangerous precedent – Nalerigu/Gambaga MP

Nurudeen Mohammed Mumuni, the MP for Nalerigu/Gambaga, has criticized the NDC. He claims there is a worrying erosion of democratic norms. This follows the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi was arrested on May 27 by the CID of the Ghana Police. He was later picked up by EOCO over alleged financial misconduct involving EXIM Bank. Although he received bail of GHS50 million with two sureties, his team has not met the conditions. As a result, he remains in detention.

On Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mumuni expressed serious concerns about this situation. He noted that failing to release Wontumi within 48 hours is troubling. “It is past 48 hours,” he said. “This is dangerous to our democracy and sets a bad precedent.”

Mumuni warned that unchecked actions by the NDC could lead to political retribution. He questioned if the NPP would target NDC businessmen if they regain power. “That will be wrong,” he added.

The MP urged state institutions like EOCO to remain independent and professional. He cautioned against using legal processes for political gain.
