Wontumi’s arrest: You can’t intimidate us – Minority tells Mahama

The Minority caucus in Parliament has condemned President John Dramani Mahama. They claim he is leading a scheme to silence New Patriotic Party (NPP) members. This follows the detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He remains in custody because he cannot pay a GHS50 million bail set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

On May 29, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh spoke at the EOCO office in Accra. He accused Mahama of an “evil plot” to destabilize the NPP before the 2024 elections. “Everyone has seen what is going on — the evil plot by President John Mahama,” Annoh-Dompreh stated.

He highlighted that the Ashanti Region is a stronghold for their party. “Now he wants to arrest our Chairman and hide him in secret,” he said. Annoh-Dompreh urged party members not to be confused or intimidated.

He criticized EOCO's bail terms as unprecedented and unfair. “This isn’t the first time they’ve targeted our party members,” he noted. He assured that Mahama cannot intimidate them, emphasizing Ghana's democratic values.

Annoh-Dompreh recalled that when NDC was in opposition, NPP did not use such tactics. “We never treated them this way,” he remarked. He encouraged party members to stay strong and promised updates after consultations in Parliament.
