The Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, has shared updates on Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is commonly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Justice Srem-Sai stated that Wontumi's criminal investigation is ongoing. This investigation runs alongside asset recovery processes. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is handling the case. They are working to secure suspected proceeds of crime.
In a post on X, Justice Srem-Sai wrote about the allegations against Wontumi. He faces various charges, including fraud and money laundering.
The investigation aims to prevent further loss of suspected crime proceeds. Additionally, there is a second investigation linked to an international organized crime scheme. EOCO is collaborating with international law enforcement partners on this matter.
Meanwhile, the minority in Parliament held a sit-in outside EOCO's headquarters in Accra on May 29. They are demanding the release of Chairman Wontumi, who is also the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Wontumi was arrested by EOCO after visiting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 27. He was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on May 28. However, his legal team did not meet all bail conditions by Wednesday.
As a result, Wontumi remains in custody at EOCO until those conditions are satisfied.
