Wontumi Arrest: Gary Nimako Abandons Bail Challenge After Securing Sureties

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has withdrawn a motion at the High Court in Accra. This motion sought a review of his bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Wontumi filed the motion on May 30, 2025. It was scheduled for a hearing on June 3. However, his legal team withdrew it on June 2, just one day before.

Chairman Wontumi had challenged the GH¢50 million bail amount. He also questioned the requirement for two justified sureties. His lawyers argued that these terms were excessive and punitive.

The application aimed to amend the bail conditions based on concerns in an affidavit. However, after meeting the bail requirements, his legal team found court intervention unnecessary.

Lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that all documents for the sureties were completed. He stated this made the motion redundant. Appiah-Kubi credited support from various sources, especially former Minister Bryan Acheampong.

“With sureties accepted and paperwork done, we no longer needed to proceed,” he said. “The situation is under control.”

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on May 27 and granted bail three days later. Delays in meeting bail conditions extended his custody time, prompting legal action for relief. With recent developments, he is expected to be fully cleared for release soon.
