Wontumi arrest: Posterity will judge you - Afenyo-Markin tells NDC

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticized the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is known as Chairman Wontumi and is the NPP's Ashanti Regional Chairman.

On May 30, he spoke to journalists outside the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Accra. He expressed concern about what he called a politically motivated display of power by the ruling NDC government.

Afenyo-Markin said the opposition planned to visit Wontumi but faced disruptions. “We made arrangements, but they told us a different story,” he stated.

He raised concerns about Wontumi’s bail conditions, calling them worrying. "It is troubling that someone must provide 50 million cedis worth of properties for bail," he noted.

He warned the NDC to reconsider their actions. “Posterity is watching them,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin alleged that Wontumi's detention was punitive. “He is still in custody at NIB’s Kawukudi office,” he claimed.

“They say we cannot see him until EOCO authorizes it,” he added. “They are using bail to punish him.”

He described the situation as an abuse of power. “They are showing Wontumi where power lies,” he remarked.

Afenyo-Markin called for fair political engagement. “Democracy isn’t just about court; it requires common sense too,” he explained.

“If something was wrong yesterday, it remains wrong today and tomorrow,” he emphasized.

He urged political leaders to end retaliatory actions. “Let us stop ‘you do me, I do you’ politics,” he concluded.
