Wontumi can personally satisfy ₵50m bail condition if the law permits – Appiah-Kubi

Andy Appiah-Kubi represents the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He stated that Wontumi can meet the EOCO ₵50 million bail condition if allowed by law.

Appiah-Kubi explained that a third party must prove ownership of property valued at ₵50 million. He spoke on Movement Radio on May 29, 2025. He said, “He cannot stand surety for himself.” The individual acting as surety must show their ability to fulfill the conditions.

He added that if it were legal, Wontumi would have provided his own surety. However, the law requires a third party.

Chairman Wontumi remains in EOCO custody after failing to meet bail conditions. He was arrested after visiting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on May 27.

Wontumi was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on May 28, 2025. His legal team has secured one surety but needs another to complete the requirements. Reports indicate that former MP Kennedy Agyapong has offered to be one of the sureties.

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, revealed that Wontumi is under investigation for fraud and money laundering. He is also being investigated for an international organized crime scheme.

Justice Srem-Sai noted that EOCO is working with international law enforcement partners on these investigations. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is handling asset recovery efforts related to suspected proceeds of crime.
