The Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has denied allegations of illegal mining. This activity is commonly called galamsey in Ghana.
He spoke to the media after being questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. He stated that he provided official documents to prove his mining operations are legal.
“I was invited by the police and charged with galamsey involvement,” he said. “I presented my license to show I do not engage in illegal mining.”
He also addressed claims about working in a forest area. He insisted that it was not him and asked for any evidence against him.
Wontumi clarified that he had applied to operate in a forested area. However, he was informed by various commissions that the land was protected.
“If anyone is working there now, I am not aware of it,” he added.
Chairman Wontumi rejected claims of receiving GH¢50 million from the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). He described these reports as unfounded and politically motivated.
The allegation involves payments made to his firm, Hallmark Engineering. This occurred despite a directive from then-incoming Chief of Staff Julius Debrah to freeze contract disbursements during the transition.
Wontumi insists he was not involved in any such financial transaction. He challenged those making these claims to provide proof.
