Wontumi honours CID invitation following botched arrest

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is in trouble. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

On Monday, May 26, 2025, he went to the Criminal Investigations Department. This visit follows a failed arrest attempt at his home on May 23. A team of National Security operatives and police officers tried to apprehend him.

Chairman Wontumi was with his lawyer, Godfred Yeboah Dame. Dame is a former Attorney General. Also present was Andy Appiah-Kubi, a former MP for Asante-Akim North.

The details of the questioning are unclear. The Ghana Police Service has not commented on the investigation yet. Sources suggest it may relate to recent political events.

Wontumi’s legal team plans to speak to the media after their meeting with the CID. This situation has drawn public interest. Videos online show armed personnel around his home. Supporters claim this was an attempt to intimidate him politically.

Ameyaw-Akumfi granted him bail set at GH¢10 million.
