Wontumi is on a hunger strike until he is released – Annoh-Dompreh

Frank Annoh-Dompreh, a member of parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, has shared news about Chairman Wontumi. The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is on a hunger strike. He is demanding his release from EOCO custody.

Annoh-Dompreh stated that Wontumi has not eaten since his arrest on May 27, 2025. Speaking on Peace FM, he said, “He [Wontumi] says he will not eat and has not eaten since his arrest.” This decision is part of his hunger strike.

The doctors have been uncommunicative about Wontumi's condition. When asked questions, they do not provide helpful information. He was taken to the BNI clinic near the Immigration head office for medical attention. However, details about his health and medication remain unclear.

Lawyers are not allowed to see or check on him. Annoh-Dompreh questioned if Wontumi had harmed anyone.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO after visiting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra on May 27. He was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on May 28, 2025. However, his legal team did not fully meet the bail conditions that day.

Reports indicate that he secured one surety but needs another to complete the requirements. Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has offered to be one of the sureties.

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai announced that Wontumi is under investigation for fraud and money laundering. He is also being investigated for involvement in an international organized crime scheme.

Justice Srem-Sai noted that EOCO is working closely with international law enforcement partners on these investigations. The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) is handling asset recovery efforts related to suspected proceeds of crime.
