The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is known as Chairman Wontumi. He may be released from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) today, June 2, 2025.
Wontumi was granted bail last week. However, he remains in custody due to procedural issues with his bail conditions. His lawyer, Hon. Andy Appiah-Kubi, is confident that these issues will be resolved today.
Appiah-Kubi told reporters about the difficulties they faced. He said they would sort everything out on Monday for a fresh start.
Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since May 28. He faces allegations of financial crimes like fraud and money laundering. He was granted GHC50 million bail with two sureties but delays in processing stalled his release.
His legal team claims he fulfilled the bail terms by May 30. Appiah-Kubi stated that no new charges have been added since Wontumi's arrest.
This case has attracted public interest, especially among political circles. Wontumi is a prominent figure in the ruling NPP, and his detention raises questions.
Supporters and legal representatives are hopeful for his release today after five days in custody.
