Wontumi’s bail to be resolved today – Andy Appiah-Kubi

Andy Appiah-Kubi is the lawyer for Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is also known as Chairman Wontumi. Appiah-Kubi stated that Wontumi's bail will be resolved today, June 2.

Wontumi was arrested by EOCO after visiting the CID headquarters on May 27. He was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on May 28. However, his legal team did not meet all conditions for his release.

On June 1, Appiah-Kubi told JOY News, “We pray to God that Wontumi is free tomorrow.” He explained that despite meeting bail conditions, a new legal application delayed Wontumi’s release.

Appiah-Kubi said, “My client is not going home tonight.” He added that they faced a challenge needing resolution before moving forward. An unexpected application was filed against them and would be addressed on Monday.

In an interview with Oyerepa TV/FM, Appiah-Kubi confirmed that Wontumi's arrest was lawful. He stated that EOCO acted correctly in this situation.

He explained that the arrest was made under a warrant issued for Wontumi. If there are issues, they lie within the law itself, not EOCO's actions.

Appiah-Kubi noted that EOCO has similar powers to the police under their act. However, he pointed out a flaw: warrants should be issued by courts, not EOCO itself. This means EOCO can decide when to make arrests without court oversight.
