Wontumi’s detention: I have blocked Appiah-Kubi; I won’t talk to him again – Gary Nimako

Gary Nimako, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Legal Affairs, has blocked lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi. He vowed never to speak to him again.

Mr. Nimako accused Mr. Appiah-Kubi of betraying him. Mr. Appiah-Kubi is the lead counsel for NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Wontumi.

On Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Nimako expressed his concerns. He was upset about Mr. Appiah-Kubi's public statement regarding a variation application he filed. This application allegedly delayed the bail process for Chairman Wontumi.

“I spoke with him before applying,” said Mr. Nimako. “Then he claimed the process had been frustrated, which was unfair.”

Mr. Nimako added that he had blocked Mr. Appiah-Kubi's number due to this incident. “If I can meet you in confidence and you act this way publicly, I cannot talk to you again,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi is under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The allegations include financial crimes like fraud and money laundering.

He was granted GH₵50 million bail on May 28 with two sureties. However, delays in meeting bail terms stalled his release despite conditions being met by May 30.

To speed up the process, Mr. Nimako filed an application on May 30 for reconsideration of bail terms based on an affidavit.

The motion was set for hearing on June 3, 2025. However, on June 2, 2025, Mr. Nimako withdrew the application while Chairman Wontumi remained in EOCO custody amid agitation from NPP members.
