Wontumi secures one surety needs one more to meet full bail conditions

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has secured one surety. He still needs one more to meet his bail conditions.

Wontumi spent the night at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He failed to meet his bail conditions after being granted GH₵50 million bail on May 28, 2025. His legal team did not fully satisfy the requirements for his release.

Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has offered to be one of Wontumi's sureties. Wontumi is under investigation by EOCO for alleged financial transactions with the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank. Reports claim he received $12 million from EXIM Bank.

Alex Kwaku Tetteh, president of Citizen Eye Ghana, stated that Wontumi received this amount. Wontumi's lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, expressed confidence that all requirements would be fulfilled by Thursday, May 29.

Wontumi was arrested by EOCO after visiting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on May 27. EOCO has not issued an official statement regarding his arrest. The details of the investigation remain undisclosed.

Wontumi’s legal team revealed he received a writ of summons from EXIM Bank, adding to his legal challenges. This writ follows his interrogation by EOCO on May 27, 2025.

Appiah-Kubi stated they would respond to the writ of summons soon. He emphasized that they will argue this is a civil matter in court. He remains confident about mounting a defense against both issues raised in court.
