Wontumi sleeps in EOCO custody after failing to meet bail conditions

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, spent the night at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He failed to meet his bail conditions.

Wontumi was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on May 28, 2025. However, his legal team did not fully satisfy the requirements for his release. EOCO is investigating him over alleged financial transactions with the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.

Chairman Wontumi is accused of receiving $12 million from EXIM Bank. Alex Kwaku Tetteh, president of Citizen Eye Ghana, made this claim. Wontumi's lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, expressed confidence that all requirements would be met by May 29.

Wontumi was arrested after visiting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on May 27. EOCO has not yet issued an official statement regarding his arrest. The details of the investigation remain undisclosed.

Wontumi’s legal team revealed he received a writ of summons from EXIM Bank. This adds to his legal challenges following his interrogation by EOCO on May 27. Appiah-Kubi stated they would respond to the writ soon.

He emphasized that they will argue in court that this is a civil matter. He believes they can mount a defense against both the civil and criminal aspects of the case.
