Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has turned himself in. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This follows a failed search attempt by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) at his home.
Last week, there was a tense standoff at his residence. Armed national security operatives tried to execute a court-approved search warrant. The situation nearly led to his arrest when Wontumi raised an alarm. This drew a crowd of supporters to the scene.
Negotiations occurred between the operatives and Wontumi’s legal team. Eventually, the operatives withdrew. Wontumi's lawyers agreed to present him to police on Monday.
The state is investigating Wontumi for alleged illegal mining activities. His company, Akonta Mining, is under scrutiny for these claims. Earlier this month, Land and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah announced that Akonta Mining's lease was terminated. However, Wontumi is challenging this cancellation in court.
Wontumi's lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, expressed surprise at recent events. He noted that confronting someone with armed personnel can be alarming and may breach rights.
Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi defended the operation's legality. He stated it was part of due process and urged those who disagree to go to court. However, he emphasized that security services will continue their duties regardless.
