Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, visited former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia today. This meeting took place at Bawumia's office in Accra. It followed Wontumi's release from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Earlier, Wontumi had been at the NPP headquarters in Accra. He received a warm welcome from party executives and supporters.
Wontumi was arrested on May 27, 2025. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) invited him for questioning about illegal mining activities. He was later detained by EOCO for several days. Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai stated that Wontumi faced multiple charges, including fraud and money laundering.
After nearly a week in custody, he was granted bail on June 2, 2025. His bail was set at GH₵50 million with two sureties. One surety was Dr. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and Minister for Food and Agriculture. NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong confirmed the bail conditions.
NDC communicator Beatrice Annan said Wontumi's rights were not violated during his detention. She noted that he received bail promptly.
Political analysts view Wontumi's visit to Bawumia as strategic. It aims to reaffirm alliances within the NPP ahead of upcoming elections. His actions suggest a quick return to political activities and support consolidation within the party.
As EOCO investigations continue, Wontumi is expected to comply with legal proceedings while fulfilling his political duties. The public remains interested in his case, highlighting the link between legal issues and politics in Ghana’s democracy.
