The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is known as Chairman Wontumi. He made a dramatic appearance at the party’s headquarters in Accra on June 3. This was one day after his release from brief detention.
Wontumi was released by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He met his bail conditions successfully.
He spent a week in detention. Upon arrival, he was greeted by many jubilant supporters. Wontumi publicly thanked the party leadership and grassroots members for their support during his time in custody.
On the day of his release, observers noted he appeared unwell. However, on this occasion, he wore all-white clothing and smiled widely. He exchanged pleasantries with supporters and even raised one leg to show he was okay, despite limping earlier.
In his address, Wontumi praised NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong. He expressed special appreciation for Frimpong's leadership during his ordeal.
“I had to come and show how grateful I am,” Wontumi said. “May God bless you. Everything will be fine.”
Chairman Wontumi was granted bail set at GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified. His arrest occurred on May 27 amid investigations into alleged fraud and money laundering.
It remains unclear when the government will finish its investigations or bring charges against him.
