The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, known as Nana B, condemned the arrest of Chairman Wontumi.
Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP. He was arrested by officials from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). This happened after he left the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters. He had been questioned about illegal mining activities and unauthorized entry into forest reserves.
In an interview on Joy FM's Newsnight, Nana B expressed his outrage. He raised concerns about the rule of law under the current administration.
He said, “Yesterday, he was invited by CID for questioning.” Wontumi cooperated and was granted bail after his interrogation. However, as he left CID premises, armed men arrived in four pickups to arrest him.
Nana B described this arrest as backward and unnecessary. He questioned if such aggressive law enforcement aligns with democratic values promised by President John Mahama.
He stated, “I’m not sure this is the kind of leadership Ghanaians voted for.” He emphasized that citizens would not support a government that arrests people in such a manner.
Nana B also criticized EOCO for their lack of transparency. Party leaders waited over two hours without any updates on Wontumi’s location or legal status.
