The Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Berenice Owen-Jones, spoke in Accra. She addressed media professionals, academics, and industry stakeholders. This event marked World Press Freedom Day.
The theme was “The Future of Free Expression in an Era of Artificial Intelligence.” Experts gathered to discuss AI's opportunities and challenges in journalism.
High Commissioner Owen-Jones stressed the importance of press freedom. She noted that it is declining in many countries. She highlighted the need to navigate AI’s impact on information gathering and sharing.
Mr. Raymond Smith, founder of AfriMass Network, supported her views. He stated that AI should not replace journalists but enhance journalism. He pointed out AI's potential to generate news content and improve efficiency.
AfriMass Network plans to launch a program for young media professionals. This program will focus on discussions about AI’s impact on journalism. It aims to foster collaboration between industry partners and media platforms.
Mr. John Kumi leads the Communication and Journalism Department at BlueCrest College. He emphasized responsible freedom of expression during his remarks. He called for a balance between free expression and the duty to truth, dignity, and peace.
