Fatimatu Abubakar, the former Minister of Information, has a question for President John Dramani Mahama. She asked if he would be happy if he faced impeachment like Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.
Abubakar pointed out that everyone knows the President’s spouse uses state funds. She claimed that Lordina Mahama's state trips are funded by taxpayers. This is similar to accusations against the suspended Chief Justice regarding her family.
In an interview on Movement TV, Abubakar questioned Mahama directly. She asked if he would be pleased if he were treated the same way. She emphasized that the Chief Justice is not part of the Executive branch.
Abubakar referenced Article 125(3) of the Constitution. It states that all judicial power belongs to the Judiciary. She then posed another question about impeaching the president over his wife’s actions.
She noted that only young NDC members seem concerned about this issue. Her comments came after Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo based on a prima facie case from the Council of State.
The President formed a committee to investigate this matter, following Article 146(6) of the Constitution. The committee was established in consultation with the Council of State.
Two prominent lawyers from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Tsatsu Tsikata and Thadeus Sory, are representing petitioners in this case. Lawyer and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor is also involved as a representative for one petitioner.
The investigation began on May 15, 2025, after Torkornoo's suspension. During their first meeting, Tsikata and Sory identified themselves as lawyers for one group of petitioners. Barker-Vormawor represented another petitioner alongside ACP Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo, who is representing himself.
