Fatimatu Abubakar, the former Minister of Information, has questioned President John Dramani Mahama. She asked if he would be happy if impeached over his wife, Lordina Mahama.
Abubakar pointed out that many know the First Lady uses state funds for travel. She compared this to accusations against the suspended Chief Justice regarding her family’s travel expenses.
In an interview on Movement TV, Abubakar asked, “Would President Mahama be happy if this happened to him?” She emphasized that people pretend not to know about the misuse of state funds for flight tickets.
She noted that the Chief Justice is not part of the Executive branch. The Chief Justice leads the Judiciary, as stated in Article 125(3) of the Constitution.
Abubakar raised concerns about whether impeachment should occur due to Lordina's actions. She mentioned that only young NDC members seem to care about her flying business class.
Her comments came after President Mahama suspended the Chief Justice based on a prima facie case from the Council of State. He formed a committee under Article 146(6) of the Constitution to investigate petitions against her.
Two prominent lawyers from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Tsatsu Tsikata and Thadeus Sory, are representing petitioners in this probe. Activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor is also involved as a representative for another petitioner.
The investigation began on May 15, 2025, following the Chief Justice's suspension. During their first meeting, Tsikata and Sory identified themselves as lawyers for one petitioner group. Barker-Vormawor represented another petitioner alongside ACP Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo, who is self-representing.
