Malik Basintale, the CEO of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), opposes the contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited. He calls it “evil” and exploitative.
In a statement on Facebook, Malik vowed not to renew the sanitation module contract. He cited injustice against Ghana’s youth as his reason.
“For 7 years and 9 months, the NPP renewed this contract,” he said. “They paid the youth only GH¢250.”
He added, “It is EVIL for the previous government to have done this. I SHALL STOP IT.”
Malik's comments follow public outrage over the contract terms. The arrangement allocates GH¢850 monthly per sanitation worker. However, workers receive only GH¢250 while Zoomlion keeps GH¢600 as management fees.
Appointed under President John Dramani Mahama, Malik promised change. He stated that this status quo will not continue under his leadership.
“H.E John Dramani Mahama came to reset Ghana,” he noted. “This includes fair pay for every worker.”
Malik expressed empathy for ordinary Ghanaians in his appeal. He said if his family were Zoomlion workers, he would be unhappy with their low salary.
“I can’t be happy with your family receiving just GH¢250,” he added.
To promote accountability and reform, Malik will host a live session on Facebook tonight at 8 PM. He aims to engage with the public about the future of YEA's sanitation module.
“Change came on December 7th, and change must happen,” he emphasized. “We can’t fail the masses.”
