Yohuno Orders Detention Of 3 Cops ...Over Alleged $70k Theft

Police Arrest Suspect in $70,000 Theft Case

The police have arrested a suspect in a $70,000 theft. This occurred just two days after Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno ordered the detention of three policemen linked to the case.

The suspect is 31-year-old Abdul Munaf Lawal, also known as Doctor. After his arrest, police recovered $10,000 and some Ghana Cedis from him. However, it is unclear if this money will be used as evidence in court.

A source close to the Accra Regional Police Command provided this information. The Chronicle has chosen not to disclose the names of the three policemen involved at this time.

Abdulai Salifu, a 49-year-old black marketeer from Tema, shared his experience with The Chronicle. On April 8, 2025, he received a call from Kumasi about assisting a client in Accra with $70,000.

Salifu asked his colleague Hamza for help. Hamza provided $10,000 while another associate named Safianu contributed $60,000. Together they gathered the required amount.

The client claimed to work for Parliament and wanted to meet at ECOBANK's Legon Campus Branch after 6 PM. Salifu arrived at the bank around 6:30 PM and met the client in a V-8 Land Cruiser.

The client wore a nose mask and invited Salifu into the vehicle for their transaction. He said that even though the bank was closed, he would verify the money using a counterfeit-detecting machine.

Salifu agreed and waited inside the vehicle while the client went to check on the cash. Shortly after leaving for the back of the bank, police arrived in a patrol vehicle.

An officer approached and called out "Doc Doc," asking about Abdul Munaf Lawal's whereabouts. A man in plain clothes then entered Salifu's vehicle without speaking.

The driver mentioned an inspector was present and passed his phone to him for conversation. Meanwhile, Salifu remained inside with another person while discussions took place outside.

Afterward, officers ordered them to follow their patrol car to the station. Both vehicles stopped near Charge Office where everyone got out.

Salifu noticed that discussions were happening between officers and drivers nearby. Suddenly, he saw them rush back into their vehicle and drive off quickly.

Despite shouting that his money was with them, police did not intervene. He contacted colleagues who soon arrived at Legon Police Station demanding action.

Both Salifu and his colleagues were interrogated by police leadership that night. During this time, Safianu accused Salifu of being responsible for losing the stolen money.

Salifu was detained from early Wednesday morning until Thursday night before being granted bail. On Monday April 7th he reported to Police Headquarters seeking action on his case.

His complaint was referred to CID’s Anti-Armed Robbery Unit but later transferred back to Accra Regional Police Command before any action could be taken.

An anonymous source revealed that IGP Yohuno confronted local officers when he learned they lacked knowledge about key details of this case.

On Wednesday night following these events, IGP Yohuno ordered three policemen detained and interdicted immediately.

On Good Friday April 18th—just two days later—the suspect Abdul Munaf Lawal was apprehended by police.

On Saturday April 19th during questioning he led detectives to Kumasi claiming he spent most of it gambling.
