Police Arrest Suspect in $70,000 Theft Case
The police have arrested a suspect in the theft of $70,000. This occurred just two days after Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno ordered the detention of three policemen involved in the case.
The suspect is 31-year-old Abdul Munaf Lawal, also known as Doctor. After his arrest, police recovered $10,000 and some Ghana Cedis from him. However, it is unclear if this amount will be used as evidence in court.
A source close to the Accra Regional Police Command provided this information. The Chronicle has not disclosed the names of the three policemen involved.
Abdulai Salifu, a 49-year-old black marketeer from Tema, shared his experience with The Chronicle. On April 8, 2025, he received a call from Kumasi about assisting a client in Accra with $70,000.
Salifu asked his colleague Hamza for help. Hamza provided $10,000 while another colleague named Safianu contributed $60,000. Together they gathered the required amount.
The client claimed to work at Parliament House and wanted to meet at ECOBANK's Legon Campus Branch after 6 PM. Salifu arrived at 6:30 PM and met the client in a V-8 Land Cruiser.
The client wore a nose mask and invited Salifu into the vehicle for their transaction. He claimed that even though the bank was closed, he could verify the money’s authenticity using a counterfeit-detecting machine.
Salifu agreed to wait inside while the client went to check on the money. Shortly after leaving for the bank's back entrance, a police patrol vehicle arrived.
An officer approached and called out for "Doc." He claimed he had been trying to reach him by phone without success. A man wearing plain clothes and a bulletproof vest entered the vehicle without speaking.
The driver then spoke on his phone with an inspector (name withheld). After their conversation ended, they were instructed to follow the patrol vehicle to the police station.
Both vehicles stopped near the Charge Office where everyone got out. The officers began discussing among themselves while Salifu remained with one man in plain clothes.
Suddenly, he saw them rush back into their vehicle and drive off quickly. Despite shouting that his money was inside that car, no one helped him.
Salifu contacted his colleagues who quickly arrived at Legon Police Station. This led to chaos which prompted the District Commander to come down late that night.
Both Salifu and his colleagues were interrogated by police officers present there. During this time, Safianu accused Salifu of being responsible for losing their money.
Salifu was detained from early Wednesday morning until Thursday night before being granted bail. On Monday before this incident occurred, he had reported it at Police Headquarters and petitioned CID for action.
The case was referred to Anti-Armed Robbery Unit but was later sent back to Accra Regional Police Command before any action could be taken.
An anonymous source revealed that IGP Yohuno confronted officers when he learned about miscommunication regarding this case among them.
On April 18th—Good Friday—just two days after IGP's orders—the suspect Abdul Munaf Lawal was arrested by police officers.
On April 19th during questioning, Lawal took detectives to Kumasi where he claimed he spent $60,000 on gambling.
Stay tuned as The Chronicle continues following this investigation into theft mystery.
