You'll pay 'Dumsor Levy' even when you are walking - Alhassan Tampuli asserts

Alhassan Tampuli, the MP for Gushegu, criticized the new 'Dumsor Levy.' He believes it unfairly burdens all Ghanaians, even those who don’t buy fuel.

Tampuli spoke on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show on June 5. He said the levy is so widespread that "even when you are walking," you pay for it.

He compared the Dumsor Levy to the Electronic Levy (E-Levy) from the previous government. He called E-Levy an “innovative” way to expand the tax base.

Tampuli noted that E-Levy had exemptions, like not charging for mobile money transfers.

He expressed concern about how Dumsor Levy affects the economy. Since it is based on fuel pricing, he sees it as a heavier tax.

“With this Dumsor Levy, even when you are walking you pay,” he stated. Fuel prices impact everything in Ghana, he explained.

He warned of rising transport fares and food prices due to this policy. The general cost of living will also increase as a result.

His comments come amid criticism from opposition lawmakers and civil groups. They argue that this levy goes against the government's promise to remove "nuisance taxes."
