You're disrespecting the rights of suspects - Minority slams AG

The Minority in Parliament has criticized Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine. They accuse him of disrespecting the constitutional rights of crime suspects.

On Monday, the Attorney General spoke to journalists. He outlined various offences allegedly committed by the former Director-General of the Bureau of National Communications.

At a news conference, John Darko, Legal Counsel to the Minority and MP for Suame, spoke out. He accused the Attorney General of conducting a media trial. He said this shows a failure to respect arrested individuals' rights.

Darko emphasized that enforcing laws must follow constitutional provisions. The Attorney General's role requires protecting those charged with crimes. Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court or until they plead guilty.

The Minority insists they will not be intimidated by defamation threats. They will continue holding the government accountable for justice.

Lawyers for Kwabena Adu Boahene and his wife have also spoken out. They accused the Attorney General of conducting a "trial by media." They believe he should allow due process to take its course.

In a legal letter dated March 24, Zoe, Akyea & Co. condemned the AG's actions. They criticized him for branding their clients as "state looters" during a press conference. Investigations by EOCO are still ongoing.

The lawyers stated that the Attorney General has prejudged their clients publicly. This undermines their right to a fair trial and damages public perception before formal charges are made.

They expressed concern about the AG’s comfort with making statements without proof beyond reasonable doubt. The lawyers argued that he is acting as both prosecutor and judge while claiming investigations continue.

They believe that changing governments should not lead to violations of rule of law principles. Feeding biased information to the press creates unmitigated prejudice with serious consequences, which they plan to address legally.
