You benefited from the same Council you now criticize – Amidu to Prempeh

Martin Amidu has criticized Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh. He is the Chair of the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC). Amidu accuses Prempeh of hypocrisy and deception in his recent proposals about the Council of State.

Amidu responded to Prempeh’s reform suggestions reported by Joy FM on May 3, 2025. He stated that Prempeh accepted his "handpicked" appointment without objection. He served for almost four years on the Law Reform Commission after President Akufo-Addo consulted the Council of State.

Amidu believes Prempeh is undermining the institution that helped him rise politically. He called this behavior “double speak” in an open letter to MyNewsGH.

Amidu also questioned the credibility of the platforms from which Prempeh spoke. He stated that IEA and CDD-Ghana are not politically neutral NGOs. Instead, they work with political elites for power to benefit their foreign financiers.

He challenged Prempeh’s philosophical basis for reforming the Council of State. Amidu argued that constitutional documents depend on human integrity, not just rules.

He noted that issues like excessive presidential influence are due to human actors failing their oaths, not flaws in design.

Amidu defended the original intent behind the Council of State. He emphasized its effectiveness relies on ethical conduct, not structural design alone.

“The Council of State was meant to be constrained by members' oaths,” he said. These oaths are mere words unless upheld by individuals.

He warned that if Prempeh's campaign succeeds, it could lead to dangerous constitutional amendments. Such changes may threaten the governing NDC's political future.

“Amendments to entrenched provisions could harm NDC's chances in future referendums,” he concluded. This could have serious consequences for their ambitions in the 2028 elections.
