You don’t own our democracy – Ahiagbah slams Mahama over arrests of NPP members

Richard Ahiagbah, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), criticized President John Mahama's administration. He accused it of undermining Ghana’s democracy. He described this as politically motivated actions against key NPP members.

On May 23, Mr. Ahiagbah spoke on JoyNews’ The Pulse. He reacted to the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, known as Adenta Kumi. This followed a police and national security operation at the home of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also called Chairman Wontumi.

Mr. Ahiagbah did not directly blame President Mahama for these operations. However, he stated that the President is responsible for what he called “an affront to democracy.”

He said, “This is not to say that President Mahama is sanctioning this, but he has absolute responsibility for the mess that is happening.” He emphasized that Ghanaians must remind the President that democracy belongs to them.

Mr. Ahiagbah warned against trampling on Ghana’s democratic space. He noted that this space was hard-won through decades of political struggle.

He added, "They cannot undermine this democracy that many have fought for." He reminded everyone that Ghanaians chose Mahama as president and that democracy does not belong to any one person or party.

The NPP communications director stressed this issue goes beyond party lines. "This is not an NPP matter; it is about our democracy," he said.

He urged those in power to remember their predecessors and respect democratic principles.
