Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has responded to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's criticism of the Dumsor Levy. He accused the former Vice President's administration of imposing over 30 taxes during its eight years in power.
Kwakye Ofosu spoke on JoyNews' Newsfile programme on Saturday, June 7. He said, “If his government had imposed just E-levy, Ghanaians wouldn't have risen against it.” He dismissed Bawumia’s comments as hypocritical and politically motivated.
During his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Central Region, Dr. Bawumia criticized the NDC government. He claimed they betrayed Ghanaians by scrapping the unpopular E-levy and introducing a new "Dumsor Levy."
Bawumia warned citizens to expect more taxes in the future. He argued that this move showed the NDC deceived voters during the 2024 election campaign.
The new levy comes from the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025. It imposes a GH¢1 surcharge per litre on petroleum products. The goal is to raise revenue for a US$3.1 billion energy sector debt and secure US$1.2 billion worth of fuel for thermal power generation.
The Minority has criticized this bill strongly. They called it a “predatory tax” passed hastily without proper transparency or consultation.
